Quickie review: Ruroni Kenshin, Vol. 2
The writing is still holding up quite nicely. The nonsense about Sano being the "Fight Merchant" is gotten out of the way quickly, thank goodness. The next battle, with the utterly mad samurai, was effectively creepy in parts prior to Kaoru being kidnapped. Afterward he just seemed frothing at the mouth mad, which undercut Kenshin's dangerous slide into returning to his Battosai ways. Having seen Kenshin at his worst in "Samurai X", I know he'd *never* be as bad off as that guy.
The final story, the beginning of the arc with Suzume, is more finely layered than as it appeared in the TV series. Freed from the constraints of TV standards & practices, Kenshin and Sano's gambling session goes on a bit longer (and Kenshin actaully WINS some money), allowing a bit more background to be inserted concerning the offscreen death of Sano's friend.
Looking forward to Volume Three.
