Well, first I thought rabbit or hare, but they definatly don't have long tails ^^ Besides, they are rarely portrayed hopping but kangaroos are portayed almost only in that way. Anwyay, it fits to have an Australian air force plain in your story. I like that about Terinu (the comic) that it doesn't center around America and Americans like so many other science fiction or fantasy stories do.
