Fic: Altered Trajectory (cont.)
With life came... shouldn't there have been pain? Instead she felt a vague floating sensation. Ah, I'm dead, she thought. She was laying in the snow in the Cold and Dark, and need only open her eyes to see the Holy Den Mother's light to guide her to her cave. No, that wasn't right either, for she could now feel soft linens under her head, and someone gripping her paw tightly, though there was a disturbing lack of sensation below her chest.
Hazel opened her eyes. No, not the Cold and Dark, just a hospital bed in a dimly lit room, with privacy screens all around. She turned her head slightly to see Rufus half falling out of a chair, head resting on the edge of her bed, dead asleep, his paw in hers.
“Hey,” she said softly, her voice sounding a bit nasal from the oxygen tube stuck up her nose. She gave his paw a tug. “Hey, Ru.”
“Ah?” Rufus raised his head, blinking sleep from his eyes. “Hazel... Oh, thank the Holy Mother.” He stood and wrapped his arm around her neck, hugging her gently and wiping tears against her cheek.
“Hey, hey, I'm all right,” she murmured, licking his face in turn. “Least I think so. Can't feel much below my busom though.”
“Spinal block,” he said. “They don't want you moving until the work they did on your stomach has time to heal.”
“Ah, really? What happened? I remember us getting married, then everything kinda went blank. Where are we anyway?”
“We're aboard a Human Federation battle-carrier, the FSS Edward Rickenbacker, Admiral Erwin Blake's flagship. They brought us aboard a few minutes after I married us. By the time they'd gotten the landing bay pressurized you had stopped breathing, but the med team was right there and they managed to get your heart restarted. You've been out for almost a day.” Rufus swallowed. “Thought I'd lost you.”
“Oh, you know I'm too much of a pain to leave you alone,” she said. Hazel rubbed her cheek against his, then paused to think. “Wait, wait... Admiral Blake? Oh frell, you mean Commander Bitch's da? Why aren't we both in the brig then?”
He leaned back a bit to give her room and let her see his smile. “Oh, we’re not in the brig, we’re honored guests right now.”
She gave him a sour look. “I’ve been an honored guest on this trip already. It wasn’t much better than being prisoner.”
“No, we are this time, seriously. It appears that the good Admiral is a trifle peeved at his daughter for exceeding her orders, not to mention starting a diplomatic incident by torturing the son of an influential countess in the Council of Farmer Lords.”
“Speaking of which…” she started to ask.
He squeezed her paw. “I’m back on my meds as of four hours ago. I had to give the last of the Juno time to leave my system.”
“Ouch.”
“Yes, though not quite comparable to your little scratch.”
She lifted up her hospital gown to take a peek at the bandage covering her shaved abdomen and shook her head. “I don’t think I’ll be swimming in a bikini anytime soon.”
“Quite. Though if get the urge I’ll be sure to have a private pool built at the manor house.”
“Whose? Not your mother’s place.”
“Why not? It’s the least I could do for my wife.”
It felt to Hazel as if her heart stopped, though the monitor sitting beside her bed said otherwise. “What do you mean, Rufus?”
“Well you are a Vicountess now,” he said.
She felt her face flush. “Ru... when I asked you to do that, I thought I was going to die in a few minutes. I didn't figure... I didn't think...”
“You didn't think I'd take it seriously?” he asked, his eyes grave.
She closed her eyes, squeezing his paw. “No, that's not what I meant. I mean... Oh, Holy Den Mother bless me, I don't know what I mean.”
“Hazel, look at me,” Rufus said. When she opened her eyes, he was looking down at her, as serious as she'd ever seen him. “I love you, Haz Elin Swiftfoot. We are mated now, however quickly and clumsily and desperately. I meant what I said back there. Only the Holy Den Mother herself will be able to tear us asunder now.”
She nodded. “I love you too. Wish it were a better honeymoon though.”
He chuckled softly. “We'll have a proper one once you're healed up. Maybe even another wedding, if only to satisfy my sister Bethany, who'll be sorely disappointed if she doesn’t get to be your bridesmaid.”
“Works for me.” She sank back in her pillows. “What should we put on our gift list?”
Rufus' eyes twinkled. “Well, there's a lovely one aboard the Falcon Claw to start with.”

That was a horrid, horrid cliffhanger, sir.
Bravo!

Of course Rufus needs a replacement for his White Knight - so the White Knight II might be coming in handy =P
So, Private (or is she Lieutenant now?) Blake has disappointed dear daddy :D I wonder what will happen to her now (read: what decision about her future place of imprisonment did you have made for her)...
Yeah, me want to see a proper wedding and honeymoon, too :D (...of course Bethany is right!)

So what is Rufus considering as a wedding present?

Well Aunt Dottie will certainly liven up the party. :) Depending on how soon it is after the political situation calms down, Teri, Lance and Matt might show up.
Hmm. May have to invent a few more relatives for Hazel. Seeing them bump against Rufus' 'friends' like Fam/Tam from the airship scene in "Spin Recovery" would be fun. Most of them would probably be convinced Rufus was marrying down....
Damnit, I can't write this. I've got too much on my plate already!!
