From Salon.com's Letters page: "David Talbot's article says John Wilkes Booth was from Maryland. Well, then he was a Yankee, not a Southerner."

Uh, yeah. I mean, Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon line, happily kept it's slaves by agreeing not to seceed (until one of the early versions of the Emancipation Proclamation came out), staged riots in Baltimore every time a Union troop train passed through until the place was under martial law, and willingly practiced segregation until the Civil Rights act was passed in the 1960's.

On the flipside we aren't exactly a Deep Red state either. We've got Erlich for a governor but he's by no means a neo-con, Barbara Mikulski was the voice of sanity in Republican politics until higher ups decided to kick her out, and we went for Kerry in the election.

But "Not Southern"? I resent that, Yankee!

:) That reminds me of my grandmother. She was raised mostly in New York and married into a family in New Orleans when she was 18. The entire time she lived there she was forever "Douglas' Yankee wife."

Heh. We're not quite that bad around here, but if this person thinks Maryland isn't the South, they ought to cross the Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore. :)
