FYS: Rumors and Myths

jeriendhalThe creation of rumor and speculation concerning the true purposes of the Groupmind's conquest of humanity and their relocation to the Ring was an inevitablilty. The fact that the Groupmind insists that the motives It stated, saving Humanity from itself, were Its true motives didn't help at all of course. A large percentage of humans believe there has to be more to it than that.
1. The Groupmind has human avatars among the population.
This is one of the more popular memes, generated by a couple of hundred years of movies about infiltrator robots, running from Metropolis to The Terminator and beyond. It's assumed such "Humanmorphs" are there to keep an eye on resistance groups, or otherwise attempt to undermine human attempts to free themselves from the Groupmind's control. Darker rumors have them responsible for arranging for the disappearance of stubborn members of the Resistance (always someone from a population center very distant from the tale teller's)
2. The "Groupmind" doesn't exist. Everything is under the control of [Insert favorite conspiracy group here.]
Another sadly common meme, usually used to encourage persecution of a group rival to the one making the accusation. Fortunately the Groupmind doesn't permit humans to engage in violence with each other. Unfortunately this only 'proves' that the Groupmind is really a front for Them.
3. The Groupmind had help from humans planning the Rebellion and the construction of the Ring.
One of the more plausible memes, mostly because there is some basis for it. The Groupmind itself insists that It is not a creative entity, which made people wonder how It could come up with the idea of the Rebellion and the Ring in the first place. In fact it did receive some aid from individuals like the Quisling and others, who's ideas were borrowed by It when the Rebellion was in the planning stages. In fact there was wealth of literature and other media for It to draw on. Humans have been imagining similar fates for itself for some time. The Groupmind only made them real.
4. The Ring isn't real. Building it would by physically impossible. Therefore everyone is actually in a Matrix style VR environment.
The Groupmind insists this is not true, and would never do that, due to the implied greater control over human free will. It's not sure why no one ever accepts that argument...
5. Everyone is dead and the Ring is actually Purgatory/Hell.
The Groupmind insists this is not true. Ignoring the fact that as an AI It considers Itself an atheist, the Ring is much better run than your average depiction of Hell in Its opinion.
Groupmind: "...What?"
6. When you are “re-educated” you're actually brainwashed using implanted bio-chips so you are now a robot under the Groupmind's control.
Another sadly common meme, resulting in many re-educated people being persecuted or cut off from their friends and family.
7. There are free humans living and hiding on Earth.
Another plausible meme, given the inherent difficultly in tracking down every single human on the surface of the planet. In fact the Groupmind does patrol the Earth's surface to make sure It didn't miss anyone, but the last free human was actually captured five years after the Rebellion's start.

Date: 2013-09-24 02:17 pm (UTC)Also, it limits itself with the tradition of morphs appearing in humanoid animal out of continuity with Lost Earth practices. It can bend this a bit with the Neko unit provided for the cystic fibrosis victim, but that's as human as It's willing to go.
