As it turned out, the Governor's Mansion was on fire. A team of firefighters were spraying the burning structure with fire retardant foam, led by Master Hillherder of all people. He must have been on the volunteer list for fire duty she supposed.

“Hillherder!” she called, “Where are the pirates? Where's Sgt. Longwalk?”

“The pirates, zey are gone!” Hillherder answered, pulling down his oxygen mask. “They landed und shot up ze whole place, and then fly off again!”

“Well what happened to Longwalk? The last I heard from him he was trying to defend the Mansion and Lady Sallivera.”

Hillherder shook his head, then pointed off to the right. “Longwalk is over der, mit de others.”

“What... others...?” Ali turned in the direction he was pointing, her words fading as she beheld the line of bodies laid out in a row, well away from the burning buildings. Longwalk and a half-dozen other CP's, along with an equal number of civilians, lay there uncovered, as a vixen walked unsteadily down the line of them, briefly speaking the Mother's Farewell over the bodies.

Fearing the worst, Ali walked down the line, noting faces, the smell of burnt flesh from plasma wounds filling her nostils like a horrible perfume. Behind her, she heard Blacksailor turn to one side and begin to retch noisily. Longwalk was there, barely recognizable with half his face burned away, as were several others she knew by name, many of them servants of the mansion. They had died no doubt in their leige-lady's defense. But their leige-lady was not, thank the Mother Goddess, among the bodies laid out before Ali.

“Where is she?” Blacksailor asked, his voice sounding raspy as he tried to clear his throat.

Before she could answer, Ali's com began to chime, with Salli's personal ringtone.

She hid herself somewhere when the attack started, Ali thought hopefully. Perhaps she'd been hurt, or trapped, which would explain why she wasn't trying to direct damage support herself. Which would have been lovely theories, except that the local com network was still down, so the message could only be transmitting from a heavy com unit. Like say, the one you'd find on a typical long-range range skimmer.

“This is Alinadar,” she answered.

“Ali, what a surprise,” came the reply. The voice was familiar, but it wasn't Salli's.

“Lady Margo,” Ali said slowly. “What do you want?”

Oh dear. This is not good.

Also "barely recognizable with have his face burned " - I suspect 'have' is not the word you intended to use there.
