Because somewhere 5,000 years in Earth's past is a copy of the present-day Daniel Jackson, along with alt-universe versions of Jack, Carter, and Teal'c, and one (possibly malfunctioning) time-ship. And anyone who believes for a second that those bunch of idiots are just going to sit in the past until they grow old and die is just fooling themselves. Even when they were frickin' android duplicates they couldn't just sit on their hands and stay put.
And there are fish in Jack's pond. Which neatly implies other changes in the timeline which absolve SG-1's writing team of any past and possibly future continuity errors (like Jacob Carter's recent declaration that he should have been dead "four years ago" when he's been carrying Selmak for at least seven years).
