The book first (don't recall if the litany was in the Sci-Fi miniseries).

Actually, you might enjoy the miniseries more. It's still soap-operatic and overwrought (and John Hurt proves he can't act worth a damn sometimes) but it's at least comprehensible and not as bloody wierd as Lynch's 80's film.
