chaypeta 's prompt of "Mark Vorkosaigan plans the perfect birthday surprise for Kareen and is having a hard time trying to hide it from her. "
"Mark! I can't access our account files!" Kareen shouted, her voice rising in panic as she rushed into the bedroom.
"Oh, really?" Mark replied blearily, checking the bedside chrono. Three minutes to midnight universal planetary time as opposed to the local time which was Oh Dear God in the morning.
"Yes, 'oh really'. Someone has changed my passwords. I can't see what's going on in our personal investment funds!"
"Ah, imagine that." He sat up in bed, rubbing his hand through his hair. "What are you doing checking the our accounts now? You said you were coming to bed."
"I was, I just wanted to finish looking over the Durona Group's latest report and I lost track of time. Good thing I did. Mark we have contact our IT people and lock down our accounts. Someone could be draining them right now!"
He glanced over to the clock, just as it clicked over to 0001 hours. "I don't think that's a worry," Mark said, getting out of bed and waddling over to the bedroom's comconsole. He tapped in his own password and a display of their accounts popped up.
"You locked me out of our joint account? Why?" Kareen demanded.
"Only for a little bit, until the contract went into effect. It was supposed to be a surprise for tomorrow morning, er, this morning."
Kareen leaned over his shoulder to look at the currently display. She let a gasp, half surprise, half delight. "You bought me a controlling share of stock in the first House Toscane convoy going to the Cetagandan Empire? Mark, do you know how much this going to be worth?"
"And it's all yours." Mark turned his head around and kissed her cheek. "Happy Birthday, my love."
