It occurs to me that I ought to be more upset about this. After some twenty+ years of steady employment (counting part-time library work in my teens), I'm going to be unemployed for the first time in my life, with a wife, child, and another unknown and unnamed little rugrat in China waiting for us to pick her up. All great pressures, yet I'm sleeping better than I have in months.

Well, one reason is that I've been thuroughly sick of my job for quite some time, and I'm not shedding tears about finally getting out of there, whether or not it was by my own choice. For another, I realized that all things considered this is a minor trouble. Consider, in the past two years I've:

Seen my father die a slow and painful death in the hospital from cancer.

Seen my mother has a nervous breakdown and be committed briefly to a psych ward.

Go through a painful, fruitless and expensive round of artificial insemminations to try and have a second child naturally.

Paper chase for China Girl, a complex and many months long process.

Compared to all that, losing my job and getting three months severance in the bargain is nothing</>.

Perspective is a good thing. Sure, it's scary on some levels. But the opportunities that await you have to be better than that continuing to work that soul-sucking job.

That's a lot to go through in a short time.

I hope you find a dream job in short order. But not too short - you should get a few days off, eh?

You are absolutely right. Compared to what else has gone on before this is a rotten, unexpected inconvenience, but not a tradgedy. And it could very well be the spring board into something much better. And as you said the severance gives you some breathing space. Though I think you should jump straight into the job hunt. A bit daunting I know. When I reentered the work force going through the whole thing of creating a curriculum vitae and sitting for interveiws felt like I was going through a time warp. But it was good because unlike hunting as a teenager you know better what to look for.

Oh yes... about sleeping better. You know exactly the same thing happened to Veg. He had been having trouble sleeping for ages but from the day he was given the boot he slept like a baby.

At least a week, I'm hoping, though I'm probably going to at least go to the store to buy a new suit (business casual for 10+ years) and do a bit of needed gardening in the back yard.

Oh, I'm definitely going on the hunt ASAP. If I can get a job comparable to my old wages quickly, I'll have three months plus unused vacation worth of paychecks to pay off our debts.
