I swear I should run for office
Sep. 12th, 2006 09:06 amWent to vote for the state primary candidates after dropping Tom off at daycare. I feel bad for the poll workers, the place was absolutely dead at 8:45, which you'd think would be prime time for folks voting on their way to work. Compared to the turnout for the 2004 national elections, which were packed and rowdy, this was practically funereal.
Anyway, if I can't get a real job soon I think I should for office next year. There were at least three candidates running unopposed for their positions, a couple of other where the multiple slots weren't completely filled. I mean, how hard can being Registrar of Wills be anyway? :)

Date: 2006-09-12 04:56 pm (UTC)Not that you can't win, (or that I haven't won, so far -- not "office" but local finanacial and policy elections -- but that victory is not even an option. It's not that the game goes into overtime, it's that there are neither goal posts or time clock, and all we can do is move the ball a little farther along the field. A never-ending-battle in all truth.
Well, very well, worth doing, mind you. But not very ego-satisfying; unless you happen to have the kind of ego satisfied by such exercise -- in which case I don't particularly want you in the game -- plenty of THOSE kinds of egos already on the field, thank you much. Democracy is a terrible way to settle questions, and representative/republican delegation of authority to egoists is even worse. The whole thing is enough to make anybody an anarchist. (For preference, the techno-capitalist sort of neo-libertarian anarchist. Not the old iron-globe bomb with sparkly-fuse threatening to set your own beard on fire sort of anarchist.)
But anyhow, go fot it.
