Lee is an independent psychomagical investigator working for the Ellay DA's office, her partner is an elfhound named Gelert with a happy family life. Together THEY FIGHT ELF CRIME!

Good book. Not a great book, but good. I rather like the concept of multiple alternate universes where everyone expects worlds to have "A functioning ethical component." (In other words, not only is Justice a real force in a universe, it shows up in courtrooms when it's time for sentencing). That said, I can't say I found the idea of Elf Glamours was handled in a particularly believable manner. Okay, so you can manipulate reality to make everything a bit prettier for the visitors, but there's no explanation as to why you should be able to do it, particularly on a planetary scale, and when it has no obvious use when you're alone in your home environment.

One of the more striking quotes (after the Elf-King has transported them to "our" universe's New York, where they're shocked to find that Justice isn't "real" here.)

"It's wierd," Lee said absently, while her mind was turning over the awful things the Elf-King had told them. "Except for the vehicles, the place looks normal." She glanced down Sixth Avenue. "But where's the World Trade Center gone?"
Gelert glanced down the way she was looking, shrugged his ears, winced. "Other side of the island, maybe? This is an alternate universe..."

The copyright on the book is 2002. Quite possibly this might be one of the first novels printed that used 9/11 in its plot, however briefly.
