Plot: The Ideaing
Oct. 25th, 2007 04:53 amI do wish I'd text chatted with Peta instead of talking to her. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I didn't record the call and now it's all slipping out of my head.
Day 2: Short on sleep and grumpy, Ru walks over to the stables to go for a ride. The (need name) aren't horses, looking more along the lines of four legged werewolves (related to Morrow Wolves?) Carnirvorous herd beasts, designed for long, loping chases of prey. Riding them requires confidence (They SMELL fear) and early training. Nasty beasts, almost the antithesis of Vulpine good manners.
Anyway, Ru goes riding, we get a tour of the estate. Possibly meeting Dotty-Aunt-Dotty (not her actual name), one of Ru's more distant relatives who is directing some university students on an archelogical dig on the grounds. Excuse for some backstory about the importance of the Brushtails in Vulpine's history, the general conservative nature of Vulpine society (the uppoer class bits at least).
Ru comes back home late for breakfast. Good mood spoiled a bit by mum fussing over his absence at breakfast. Some hints that Mum is distracted, caught between her erstwhile son returning and some kind of overly complicated land deal.
Day 3
Another doctor's appointment. Ru spots Hazel in the waiting room again, going through her withdrawl/treatment routine. Asks his doctor about her and is politely rebuffed ("We don't discuss other patients' treatment routines"). Is encouraged to Believe in something, so he's got an anchor when things get difficult. Ru is ambivilent about the idea, despite his chat with HDM in GoG.
Leaving his appointment, he hear a "Whump!" and loud cursing, turning the corner to find Hazel sitting on the floor, having tripped over her crutches and fallen. Offer to help her up is angrily rebuffed and he backs off. He refuses to take the hint and go away as she pulls herself to her feet, instead watching over her but not interfering. Names are exchanged. Her real one, his pseudonym that he's using for the clinic records (at (surprise!) Mum's urging, not wanting the Brushtail name dragged through a public scandal)
Later that afternoon he tries to reconnect with some of his old buddies from his University days. Ends up annoyed and dissapointed, bouncing up against general Town Clown shallowness (Maybe anti-alien prejudice?) in comparison to his experiences.
(Jumble of ideas below, have to order them properly and expand upon them. Just want to get them down for now.)
Hazel romance. Need ideas on how Ru can proceed. Complicatiosn arise from the whole Nobel/Commoner interface, as technically Ru is Hazel's leige lord.
Backsliding. Crisis comes up, perhaps Ru gets into a flaming row with his Mum or Hazel. Ends up trying to buy some Juno on the outskirts of the Starport and being arrested by an undercover cop. Hideous row with Mum the next morning about (FURTHER) embarrassing the family name. Ru clamps down on his anger and switches to Coldly Polite, shutting his mum down. WHole thing is swept under the carpet by the cops at Mum none to subtle urging.
The Disasterous Dinner Party. Ru attempts to bring Hazel over to Brushtail Manor to show her around. Mum is very cool at dinner, dragging Ru off in a spare moment to ask him What Is He Thinking trying to date a commoner. Hazel ends up limping off in irritation.
Bit of comedy relief from the all the soap opera, as Ru finally gets his surgery, shoulder being restructered and fitted with a base plate for his cyber arm (still on order).
(Rufus realizes he's still awake as the surgical team goes to work)
"Er, shouldn't I be unconcious for this bit?"
"Oh no, sir. We never put anyone all the way under, unless it's really serious."
"Um, all right"
(Cue Rufus staring at the ceiling for two hours, listening to very disturbing sounds of the surgeons using what appear to be (and very nearly are) carpentry tools to saw around the damaged mascle, flesh and bone. All the while the lead surgeon is keeping a running chat going about the latest sports scores, ect. More like MASH than ER.
First attempt to apologize to Hazel: EPIC FAIL, as he offers to help her jump the que to get her leg reconstruction operation done. She points out that she'd be bumping someone else back, you stupid arrogant lordling...
*Stuff happens. Ru losing confidence. Perhaps an enlightening conversation with Bethany?
Second attempt to apologize: EPIC WIN. Ru gets the bright idea of taking her flying in a literally ancient trainer aircraft (an original T-6 Texan imported from Earth by one of his loonier ancenstors). He's rated as an Instructor Pilot, so he can get away with letting her fly despite her liscence suspension. Between her handling the stick and throttle and him taking care of the rudder, they manage it.
Flying around, Hazel takes the plane over a section of the Brushtail domain, undeveloped except for small family houses nestled in wooded hills. This is the section that has been worrying Ru's mum. She wants to develop it economically, moving all the famlies there into new homes (including Hazel's), to match the economies of more urban domains. The peasantry is resisting this unexpectedly though. The Scales fall from Ru's eyes, and he promises to talk to Mum about it.
Everything is going well: Hazel has forgiven Ru. He's gotten his new cyberarm. He manages to pass through another drug-related crisis with more confidence...
Then Captain Blake shows up.
With lawyers!
