Nice murals ^^ So they're going to adopt a Chinese girl? Does that happen often in America?

Well, it was a very popular option for people who wanted to adopt children from overseas for several years. China's "One Child" policy and a cultural preference for male children resulted in a large number of girls abandoned to their orphanage system. So to alleviate the problem they streamlined their overseas adoption process, making easy for families who wanted to avoid making multiple overseas trips to take care of the paperwork involved.

Recently they've tightened up their requirements for foriegn parents, as the supply of girls has lessened thanks to a combination of demand and trying to encourage mothers not abandon female children. But we started the process before happened, so with any luck this summer we'll be welcoming a little girl into our family.

Wow, that's really great! I hope things work out and that you'll have an extra family member soon. It would be a shame of the nice room you're preparing ^^ Though I do think it's good that the chinese are trying to encourage women to keep their daughters. Or else they'll have a very male society soon, if they keep sending away their girls.

I remember reading a book some time ago about an american woman who had adopted a chinese girl and went to visit the girl's birthtown when she was four. I think it was called "With my daughter to China". I guess I could have known from that that it wasn't very uncommon ^^ How much chance would there be of someone writing a book about it if there weren't many people adopting...

Anyway, if you don't know it already, I thought it was a well written book and it might be interesting to read for you.
