Just trying to get all of this down before it flees my brain.

Alternate Title: The Ship's Two Hearts. NOTE: Sounds like a McCaffrey novel (shudder).

Setting: Fairly stereotypical "After the Empire" universe. The Empire's supply of Unobtanium ran short, so their nifty superscience gadgets (artificial gravity, anti-gravity, reactionless drives) stopped working. All stardrives are from the Good Old Days. Intersystem transport is with fuel based drives. Most of the universe reduced to scattered colonies barely kept connected with the few working starships. Perhaps one or two Pocket Empires with functioning navies.

MacGuffin: Ancient "Terran Federation" starship with a working stardrive, a full autofactory capable of making drives and maybe an unused supply of Unobtanium is found. But first you have to find it, and then you have to activate it...

Characters:

Protagonist: Typical rogue with heart of gold. Ex-Pocket Empire navy officer gone badly to seed.

Protagonist's Commander (PC): Another ex-navy fellow, possibly an alien, Owes first guy a blood debt so he calls upon him when he's searching for crew.

Patron: Elderly woman who is More Than She Appears. Who claims to have the location of the Ship and the Ship's "Heart". The Heart is the ship's AI core, without which it's brainless, nonfunctional and worthless. The second Heart is the ship's stardrive.

SC: Short for "Ship's Cat". A bioroid that looks like a stereotypical cat girl, owned by PC. Nearly mute, shy, ragged and showing every sign of being a shell-shocked abuse survivor, but an idiot savant when it comes to starship engineering

Protagonist is shocked (as much as he gets nowadays) by the idea of the straight arrow PC owning a slave. PC claims he isn't, but he won't let her go either. Arguments about this continue through the book until Her Secret is Revealed.

Now if I can just convince myself it's not going to resemble anything like George R. R. Martin's "Tuff Voyaging" I might have an original novel here...
