OC: Rachael Namatjira, Solar Patrolman

”Captain, give him a chance!” Rachael cried out, “The whole Engineering Deck is flooded with radiation from that leaking Tesla coil. There’s no way any human being could survive long to enough shut it down, but Marky isn’t human!”

Appearance: 20 year old, 5’ 8” Koori (Australian Aborigine) girl, short, curly black hair, brown eyes, dark skin and a wide face, dressed in a Solar Patrolman’s uniform with a tool belt.
Background: Rachael was born to an ex-Patrol Marine’s family and grew up in Oceania Sector (Australia/New Zealand), joining the Cadet Program as soon as she turned twelve. Aside from the usual schooling in astronomy and the sciences, she also focused on the more practical aspects of spaceship engineering, which her tutors encouraged. As a hobby she also tinkered in advanced automation, building her first practical robot when she was seventeen, just before entering the Academy.
Given the Solar Patrol’s emphasis on human achievement, her invention was greeted with… less than complete enthusiasm. Fortunately for her future career, her advisor at the Academy also put a quick kibosh on Rachael’s idea for her graduation seminar project of equipping one of the school’s training ships entirely with robots and letting it autonomously navigate to Mars to spy upon the Mind Masters. It left her frustrated and occasionally muttering “You fools” in Koori, but eventually she did graduate and was assigned to a Patrol frigate operating in the asteroid belt.
Her captain allowed her to bring her robot “Marky” onboard out of amused tolerance. This quickly turned to respect when Rachael was able to use him to shut down a malfunctioning Tesla coil that threatened to flood the entire ship with deadly radiation. Marky was promoted to “Honorary Patrolman” * and has been adopted by the entire crew as a sort of tin mascot.
Rachael’s captain also made a notation of commendation in her personal file, along with another one recommending she never be assigned to a ship going anywhere near the Overlord of Jupiter’s territory, just in case…
* A title with no practical value among actual Patrolmen, but often given as a gesture of appreciation to helpful civilians, influential politicians, and the occasional dog or cat.
Campaign Uses: Rachael is the closest thing to the “Geek Scientist” stereotype you’re likely to see in the Solar Patrol universe. When she isn’t in Engineering, she’ll likely to be found tinkering with her robot, or sipping coffee while drawing up plans for a newer and better model. If encountered as an NPC, her Gadgeteer might prove useful if the players need an unexpected techno ex machine to solve a problem. Otherwise the PC’s might assigned to rescue her, especially if someone like the Red Hive or the Overlord of Jupiter kidnaps her to build a new Army of Terror using faceless, completely loyal automatons.

Robot Mark 1 “Marky”, 50 Pt. Ally
Description: Four foot high cylindrical robot on two stubby legs, two arms with claw grippers and a round head with stereoptic eyes and a speaker grill, powered by a small internal Tesla coil.
Abilities: Generally Rachael uses Marky for fetch and carry work. He can follow simple (one sentence) voice commands and communicates by a series of clicks with his electronic relays or shuffling noises from the punch cards of his mini-infomat. For defense he can punch and grab with his gripper claws or fire an atomic pistol mounted in his torso. In practical terms he’s about as smart as a trained dog.
