And now that Arc is finished, we can go back to something a bit lighter and fluffier.
“Freeman is a guest of the Varn Gene Mage. I have been told that he will be returning to human space as soon as the Dominion has reassurance that he will not be immediately incarcerated.”
“A wise precaution, I suspect.” Rufus scratched one ear in distraction, trying to organize his thoughts. “All right, how difficult will it be to contact your go-between?”
“Fortunately they should be arriving in system in less than forty-eight hours, to act as courier for my latest reports.”
“Excellent. Right then, we’ll decamp to our base of operations and contact you within say forty hours time. That way we can talk to your courier and perhaps be escorted safely to your lord Gene Mage. Hazel, give Drisden your secured comlink. That way we can talk to him whenever necessary without having to worry about being overheard.”
“Mac is going to love that,” she said, tugging the comlink out of her ear and handing it over to the oversized, scaly humanoid.
“Who is Mac?” Drisden asked.
“Our ship’s security officer. A rather difficult person I’m afraid,” Rufus explained. He held out his hand to Drisden. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir. Here’s hoping for peaceful contact between our species.”
“On that I can agree,” Drisden said. He shook it gravely, then turned to activate the exterior monitors. They showed streets that were empty now. With the sun going down and nothing resembling a police force or even basic streetlights in the city, people would tend to go to ground in this city, Rufus suspected. And the ones that would be out an about would be the sorts to avoid. The Galapagos male scanned the area carefully, using several light spectrums to assure himself that there were no observers using stealth cloaks such as the one currently hiding Rufus’ motorbike. “It should be safe to go. I will see you within forty hours.”
“Be seeing you,” Rufus said, touching his finger to his temple, and turned with Hazel to go.
