The Ring is in geosynchronous orbit above the earth and is 5,000 (not five) kilometers in diameter. Methinks they'll need some mirrors set in place so as not to screw up with the Earth's day/night cycles.

Day/Night cycles on the Ring itself are set via polarizing panels mounted on the inside edge of the Ring. The GroupMind chose this after deciding that having orbiting panels ala Ringworld was too much of a safety hazard. That and they wanted an extra safety factor so the air wouldn't spill out.

Yeah, that means that trying to launch an escape rocket would just end up with you banging against the roof. Not that the Groupmind would let you get that far anyway.

Speaking of RingWorld, the Ring's meteor defense system has enough brains to tell the difference between a high speed rock and a man made object. The Ring is a Big Smart Object, thankyouverymuch. Fast and efficient hyper-monorails are already part of the local transportation net as well.

Actually the Groupmind has a lot of opinions about Ringworld and the Known Space universe in general, but there are still a lot of Larry Niven fans in the human population, so It keeps Its opinions to Itself.
