Continuing Angela's tale from the "For Your Safety" universe.

She watched as they boxed up her whole house, then lifted her up off the couch and escorted her to a van with a handicapped lift that took her to the airport. They escorted her onto a widebody (ha!) plane, where she and four hundred other scared out-of-their-lives passengers were flown south to somewhere, probably Africa. Where in Africa nobody ever bothered to tell her. It was bleeding hot when they were all taken off the plane at least, where another van took them to the Rest & Relaxation Centre.

Well that's what the morphs called it. Pretty much everyone immediately started calling The Village, for obvious reasons. Not that it looked anything like Portmieron. But there were twenty meter tall walls with obvious cameras mounted atop them and slightly less obvious cameras on every street corner and in all the shops. Other than that it was just another city, with a downtown with shops and restaurants and movie theaters, which people eventually started going to when they realized there was nothing to do. Most everything, especially the food, was free. Some high value stuff, like a fancy telly, they made you work for by getting "Social Credits" like helping out at the elderly care centre or babysitting or such.

Angela spent most of her time in her new apartment. Most of her old furniture that would fit had been moved in with her, the rest put into storage for later, according to Kitty. Later after what she didn't say.

The one thing they did take away was her old mobile. It was replaced by a top of the line genius phone, which worked fine, except you couldn't call out of the city. She took it for granted that the morphs could track her with it the few times she ventured out, but she'd learned the trick of pulling the battery out to power it down completely when she'd been a teenager and still able to walk far on her own.

It really wasn't that bad, as far as prisons went. Free food made up for a lot. It was hardly more constrained than her old life had been, with her limited mobility after all.

It wasn't until one morning three weeks after being taken, when she was taking her mobility scooter around the neighborhood before it got too hot, when she saw the new wall. It enclosed the apartment building two blocks down from her own and it had risen, or been put into place, during the night, sealing the whole building away.

"Kitty, what's that?" she asked, pointing to the white washed concrete.

"That's nothing to worry about, ma'am," Kitty had answered. "It's just a safety precaution, since the building isn't being used anymore."

"But where did all the people go?" Angela demanded.

"It's nothing to worry about, Angela."

"But where did they go!"

"It's nothing to worry about."

Well, she will get help.

Kinda.

I can see how it would be scary. And why did they take them out of the country? Also, I'm wondering if they're keeping people who are emotionally/familially connected together when they take them to the centers, and if they're planning on reuniting them once they wake everyone up...

Why out of the country? Probably to make sure that they're near their designated processing center, which was built away from current population centers during the period of the takeover.

And they do try to keep family units together. No reason to be cruel about the whole thing...

They do not know humans very well for all their wish to keep us safe. If I am told that something is "nothing to worry about" then that is exactly what I do. I worry. Eep!

What about significant others, and close friends?

If they're in the same neighborhood, maybe. Otherwise they're probably out of luck.
