He could kiss the Groupmind. Fifteen hundred years to think about it, and it couldn't come up with anything better than standard IPV 12 architecture to sync all of its collective brains together.
Steve hunched over his pad in the service tube, tapping furiously as he explored the Groupmind's neural net. He'd done it, he'd cracked open access to everything. The whole Ring was his to play with!
Engrossed as he was, he didn't notice as one finger slipped, brushing a button marked "EJECT".
The roar of separation charges left him deafened and retching as he found himself in freefall…

And now you know why that hypercar went flying…
