Just trying to stat out some things.

Circumference: 260,000 km.

Width: 5000 km.

Depth: 125 km. Habitat layer at 100 km

Surface Area: 1.3 billion sq. km. Approximately 50% of this is devoted to fresh water reservoirs/climate moderation system.

Mass: CLASSIFIED. Believed to be in excess of 8 x 10^24 kg.

Notes: My bugaboo currently is the mass of the thing. The Groupmind is going to build the thing solid, being a firm believer in cautious engineering principles. But the damned thing can't be too massive, or it's going to significantly effect the Earth's tides, which is going to really interfere with its goal of re-terraforming the Earth back to its pre-industrial status.

Gripping Hand, it's going to be set a fair ways out, and the tidal force is going to be evenly distributed, unlike the Moon's, which is dependent on the latter's current orbital position.

The tidal effect would be to pull the surface of the oceans higher at the equator, lower at the poles. It'd be a constant effect. So they could just terraform around it. I'd expect it to be a much smaller effect on sea level than an ice age.

If we're talking an orbital ring around the equator, you could make things interesting by oscillating it up and down along the polar axis. That way you'd get a tidal bulge going north-south, along with the tidal bulge induced by the moon. But since it's closer than the moon, but 100X its mass, you'd have massive tidal surges scouring the continents.

Blargh, that won't do at all. Drowning Panama and the African coasts is NOT in the Groupmind's gameplan. I think the RIng is going to have to go on a diet. Maybe Ring Material has the lightness of aerogel.

Look, the bigger the structure, the more flexible and dynamic it has to be. Sure, you can build a 5 story house by piling up bricks. Want a 100 story skyscraper? It's going to be a steel-truss, curtain-wall stalk that sways in the breeze and uses damping to dance through earthquakes. You can arch a stream with stones, but to vault a bay, you gotta sway.
