Looking for a new laptop.

Trying for less than $1000, preferably in the $600 to $800 range, that's good for writing, net surfing and playing something like WoW or perhaps a shooter. Anybody got any suggestions?

If there's a good discount store in your area, try for a Lenovo refurb. The quality is slipping, but I still think a refurbished Lenovo is better than most brand-new ones from other brands. Got mine for under $500 Canadian.

You could check out http://www.dell.com/outlet which is where Dell puts its returns, refurbs, surplus and slightly dinged computers at a discount. You can get a lot of discount on a slightly older model that has been returned and has a small scratch.
