Actually, it was Al Gore – “Earth in the Balance” (1992) – who characterized the internal combustion engine as “a mortal threat … more deadly than that of any military enemy.”

Well I'd regard coal fired plants as a bigger threat, but IC engines aren't doing us any favors at the moment.

IN the case of the foxen's industrial period, it was based on alcohol fuels, so the pollution danger wasn't as pressing. Deep Conservatives tend to rail against a lot of innovations...
