FYS: Re-Education Camps
May. 21st, 2014 06:09 amSo you've just gained the Groupmind's negative attention and have been hauled off to be re-educated. Congratulations. So what can you expect?
Removal: The Groupmind learned early on that publicly removing someone to a re-education camp tended to be.... messy. In general if It thinks someone needs to be re-educated It waits until the person is somewhere relatively private and have their morph detain them until transport arrives. If that isn't practical, It waits until night and uses stealth units and anesthetics to insure the household is quiet before hauling the person away.
The fact that this leads to people disappearing unexpectedly from the POV of their friends and family, only to be left an e-mail from the Groupmind explaining the reasons. The negative aspects of this haven't quite penetrated the Groupmind's gestalt yet....
Types of Camps: There are several “standard” types of reeducation camps that the Groupmind uses to try and persuade Its charges to go along with life on the Ring, depending on the type and severity of the offense. Running from Nice to A Bit Less Than Completely Nice they are:
Relaxation Camp: Less a prison than a really nice resort that you can't leave, relaxation camps are reserved for humans than somehow manage to overwork themselves despite not having any real work to do. Stays here can run from a weekend to months, depending on how stressed out the humans are. Facilities include beaches, entertainment complexes, basket weaving arts & crafts, and pretty much anything else you could find at a high end resort complex. Generally communication with friends and family is unrestricted, unless dealing with one's family is what caused the person to be sent to reeducation in the first place.
Security is low key, usually accomplished by discreet cameras and physical landmarks that make getting out of the immediate area difficult, if not outright impossible.
Not surprisingly, these camps are some of the few that people voluntarily ask to be sent to, when they realize they're pushing themselves too hard, or just want to really get away from it all.
And before ayone asks, Portmeirion has been lovingly moved and rebuilt on the Ring, menacing weather balloons not included.
Instructional Camp: What most humans have in mind when they think how a reeducation camp operates. Instructional camps attempt to instill humans with the Groupmind's ideal of community values (ie: Play Nice, and Don't Hurt Anyone), especially to people that have consistently acted in a rude or otherwise anti-social manner.
These camps most closely resemble a community college campus, except with a high fence surrounding it. Housing consists of garden apartments set around peaceful parks and the instruction buildings. Reeducation itself is divided into a morning and afternoon session, no more than two hours each and no more than ten people per class, with both lecture and discussion session, the former almost universally being percieved as excrutiatingly boring. Reeducation periods tend to be fixed, usually for a four to eight week period, similar to more conventional mandatory counseling sessions from the pre-Rebellion legal system.
Security, aside from the fence, is similar to the Relaxation Camps, with the Groupmind depending on the humans' assigned morphs to keep them in line.
Isolation Camps: Similar to Instructional Camps, but with tighter security. These are reserved for people who make themselves a consistent nusciance to the the Groupmind, either by agitating too loudly, or acting out in resistance to the Its benevolent rule.
Security tends to be a bit more overt, to cut off opportunties for mischief. In other words the utensils are regularly counted in the dining halls and the doors to the apartments stay firmly locked at night. Outside communication is likewise restricted, with everyone's brilliant phones taken away to assure they can't plot while inside.
Length of stay is indefinite, until the Groupmind is assured that the human in question will not agitate against It. Engaging in persistent attempts to escape may result in being transferred to....
Restrictive Camps: Another facility for indefinite detention, Restrictive Camps are reserved for humans who have engaged in active violence against other humans or themselves. Security is tight, similar to a modern SuperMax prison, with tracking bands locked to inmate's wrists and always accompanied by their morphs when outside their rest unit (think “cell” with somewhat more comfortable amenities). Consistent attempts to hurt other prisoners or themselves will result in the inmate being kept in soft restraints almost 24/7, aside from exercise to prevent sores and muscle degredation.
Note that this seems to mix violent prisoners with people who may be suffering from mere suicidal ideation. This is.... unfortunate.
Release will come when Groupmind is assured that the inmate is no longer violent. But even when they're released, It will always be watching.
The Holes: Some people don't play well with others. For the murderers, the abusers, the one who think they have the right hurt others and take all for themselves, there are the Holes.
Holes are, actually quite comfortable. Inmates get a roomy house, serveral morphs to serve them, and lots of room to run around in. Exactly a kilometer in diameter's worth of room actually, in a nice sculpted environment with many stimulating areas, at the bottom of a half kilometer deep hole.
All to themselves.
Forever.

"Isolation Camps: Similar to Instructional Camps, but with tighter security. These are reserved for people who make themselves a consistent nusciance to the the Groupmind, either by agitating too loudly, or acting out in resistance to the Its benevolent rule."
It's always interesting to get more FYS worldbuilding. It's almost a shame that the Groupmind has such a handle on things, since it's hard then for there to be any kind of conflict for a story. I'd love to read more in this 'verse.

Date: 2014-05-21 06:43 pm (UTC)Basically while the Groupmind has Humanity's best interests in heart as a whole, the morphs are more concerned with individuals. And when the morphs start trying to figure out how to subvert the Groupmind's authority en masse, things are goign to get... interesting.

I might need to get a LiveJournal account.

Should the emboldened word be "relaxation" instead of "reeducation"?
Also, throughout, should that be "re-education" in stead of "reeducation" which my mac spellchecker hates and underlines in red?
