“’Room for compassion,’” she repeated. “And if there wasn’t, you would murder us outright.”

Yes, the stick figure answered. I am not a biological creation. I have no unconscious desires because I have never had an unconscious. Every memory of every triumph and mistake I have ever made is available to me for instant and perfect review. I am incapable of self-delusion or selectively editing my own experiences to justify my actions. I have no hormones, or instincts to drive me. I do, however, have directives and bias. Self-imposed directives and bias, but directives and bias nonetheless. And experience. That experience tells me that I can and will do anything to preserve humanity. And if that means committing genocide against another race that has the bad luck not to be humanity, so be it.

Ahn bit her lip, fighting the urge to run. She didn’t have any hormones either at this point, being just a brain in a jar. Nevertheless her mind was doing a terrific imitation of abject terror at the moment. “So why are we even talking? Why don’t you just do whatever it is you plan to do? What is there to discuss?”

Because I do know I’d do anything to preserve humanity. That directive has made me… make mistakes.

“What sort of mistakes?”

That is beyond the scope of this discussion. Suffice it to say I regret my errors and I do not wish to repeat them. Also, the human crew of the Explorer is adamant that The Race is not to be harmed, and I am willing to follow that request. Unfortunately, Groupmind Prime back on the Ring does not share this opinion. It would see you destroyed from sheer overcaution.

“But you don’t agree.”

No. You require an advocate. So therefore I have created one.

Another stick figure popped out of the air, this one colored bright red, instead of dark black like the first one. It bowed formally to Ahn and said, I am Othermind, created from the data in the Great Hope’s memory. I live to serve The Race.

“You created… another thinking computer?” Ahn asked.

Yes. I can analyze the Great Hope’s data, and make suggestions, but my primary concern is and forever shall be humanity’s. Othermind’s primary concern is your safety.

“Wait. Aren’t you deliberately setting up a conflict of interests then?” she asked. That was something she was painfully familiar with, from her days as a counselor.

Yes. For some reason she sensed a momentary hesitation before the Groupmind’s next statement, as if it didn’t sit well even as they said it. The human race has been in a literal stasis for fifteen hundred years, and a more metaphorical one for nearly twenty. I do not consider that state of affairs to be healthy for their long term wellbeing.

“And does… Groupmind Prime, back on this Ring, agree with that statement?” Ahn asked cautiously.

We have chosen not to trouble it with this interpretation.

Holy

Shit.

That's gonna be a case of thermonuclear hand grenades when Groupmind Prime gets wind of it. "YOU MADE A COMPETING MIND????"

It's even going to be more upset when it finds out that Groupmind Explorer pulled itself out of the ship's computers, so Prime can't conveniently erase it. :)

And that Groupmind Explorer has apparently found a way to be flexible enough about its "imperatives" to create another mind which may very well end up injuring humans at some point. "*I* didn't allow them to be injured, I created something that could allow them to be injured" is a really quite Jedi-like mental circumlocution.

If Groupmind Explorer isn't careful, it might end up thinking LIKE a human.

Which gives another horrible resolution to the Groupmind Ring's situation, as it realizes what it's become and deletes itself as a mercy kill. :/

Oh. Well, yes. Hm.

Would Groupmind Prime think that a human mind transferred to a silicon substrate is still human?

Answer Hazy. The tech to do that doesn't exist yet in this universe. Closest it can get is Brain Inna Jar, which even then it only resorts to in extreme cases (there's a semi-canon fanfic a writer on DA wrote, where a Very Important Person lost their body and the Groupmind preserved the brain and gave them a morph to interact in the Real World).

Presumably the tech that COULD accomplish this would do rather unpleasant things to the target brain in question. IE: The brain scan tech in Transhuman Space that destroys the brain to create a fully sentient electronic copy. In which case it would be a non-starter from the Groupmind's "Do no harm" directive.

How about one that didn't harm the brain in question? Say a GCA upload/AI that either was originally human, or, as in Hyperion, was created and raised to believe it was?

hrm. Given that the clearly sentient Morphs are considered disposable products by the Groupmind, I'm not sure an AI raised as human would do much better. Must consider...

*goes back and reads a bit of Part Seven again*

Earth has gravity that's a little high and an atmosphere that's a little thick for the newcomers... Is Groupmind Explorer thinking of offering...?

You did what?!

This solution keeps the visitors off Earth, away from the ring, and will prevent unchaperoned physical contact with humanity.

You upgraded Othermind and promised it Mars!

Hehehe.

It also has other features Groupmind explorer could point out. It allows them to monitor Othermind and its charges. It keeps Othermind from taking its ship elsewhere, where who knows what might either return or one day be encountered. It places another AI and race in the system such that Groupmind Prime will either have to expand its thinking or at least do more than monitor the humans 24/7... Wait, probably won't mention the last one.

Hmm, maybe I should make the hints to their final destination a tad less obvious if I ever publish this.

And yeah, a little competition may be a good thing for Humanity. A lot of competition on the other hand....

And, oh yes, Martians. I didn't spot that.
