Peta actually contacted me and agreed to take a shot at both covers. I owe her big.

Peta Hewitt. Given that the Foxen started as her own Vulpine with the serial numbers scrubbed off, this is really nice of her.

Psst. You have a message from me in your LJ Inbox.

If you want to move to DW (or just back up to it while the getting is good) and need help, I'm happy to talk you through it.

Step 1 is signing up from a free Dreamwidth.org account (or one account for each LJ account you want to import to DW – they can all share an email address just fine, if you want). You don't need to do any of the configuration options; skip them and leave them for later. Just confirm your email, and you're good to import.

I got it started, though transferring all the entries seems to be taking forever.

Yeah, I'd guess there's a bit of congestion right now. It's something of of a stampede.

Excellent! If you're not just backing things up, but plan on moving+crossposting, I highly recommend configuring the crossposter to turn off commenting here and put a link to drive commenting to DW.

A bunch of people who backed up some time ago and allowed commenting in both places, I gather they just discovered that there's apparently no way for DW to import the comments on crossposts.

(If I'm being unclear, please let me know and I'm happy to unpack further.)

Well, first thing, it turns out my interlocutors were wrong about the subsequent comments thing, so it's not as much an issue as we thought. When they had tried it a while ago, re-running the Importer didn't get new comments on already-imported posts. I encouraged them to check it out again to see if there'd been further development on that, and lo, there had been, and it works right. So if you just want to re-run the importer to fetch comments from LJ, apparently that's an option.

That said, I preferred the driving all conversation to one location approach. The way you do that is, here on DW, logged in, go to https://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=othersites This is where you set up crossposting with LJ. Do that if you haven't already. Then, below that, there's a tickybox option for "Comments Disable comments on crossposts made to other sites". Turn that on. Scroll all the way to the bottom for the save button.

At that point, go try it out by posting (you can do it private, if you don't want to exercise your journal in public :) on DW, with crossposting to LJ. Then you'll see what it looks like with the default system footer appended to your LJ posts (includes the link to comment over on the right DW post and an image with a counter of comments on the DW post). If you don't like theirs, you can make your own at the DW settings page above. (I made a custom one, so it looks like my journal style.)
