Good Idea/Bad Idea: NPR Edition
Apr. 5th, 2006 11:09 amGood Idea: Make popular shows on National Public Radio availible as podcast downloads.
Bad Idea: Give listeners a way to avoid all those bloody pledge drives.

Note for Non-USAians: NPR (and its televised counterpart, the Public Broadcasting System) is the United States' equivilent to Britain's BBC, except rather than be funded via the government or television taxes, the majority of its funding comes through donations sent by listeners, gathered through local stations during seasonal pledge drives, plus larger donations via corporate sponsors (usually attached to individual shows) or non-profit groups. These pledge drives are something of a beloved headache for NPR listeners, interrupting shows for up to fifteen minutes of a time with breaks as the presenters extoll the merits of Public Radio in order to drum up funding.
Or as KVCE put in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, "Please, call in now, so we can end this humiliating begathon."

Date: 2006-04-05 04:00 pm (UTC)I'm not certain it will cut that seriously into their pledges - how many people are really set up to listen to podcasts as easily as they can listen to the radio? I'm one of those people who has MPR on practically all the time - I can't see using a podcast instead of a radio. So, it's not really a feasible way for me to avoid Gimme Week.
