And here's the part from the original Japanese series that somehow got cut when Star Blazers was dubbed. Unsuprising, given the material (I'm sure several American pilots saluted when she sank, but not like that...)

It would be wrong to point out Pearl Harbor was a better indication of the death of the Battleship, or possibly Midway.

Midway, or Coral Sea definitely. But this is the death of a Japanese icon, more specifically, not to mention setting up the theme of heroic sacrifice running through the whole Yamato series.
