Currently we're looking at sometime in April or May to recieve word on our child, so we're trying to complete the required online classes that our adoption agency wants us to do. Last night we ran through the "Conspicious Adoption" module, which basically was to clue us in that when we take our kid out in public, idiots (some of whome we might be related to) will feel compelled to ask stupid questions.

Now I understand that the idea is to train us to answer questions in a way that will make our child feel loved and to defuse potential tension. Nevertheless, I was dissapointed that the multiple choice responses we were given to choose when confronted with questions like "Does your kid speak Chinese or English" didn't include options for "Reply: 'None of your [expletive] business'" or "Raise middle finger".

You could always tell them that they mixed up the artificial insemination samples, but that you're so loving and gracious that you decided to keep the kid anyway.

Preferably, before the kid learns English or after they understand sarcasm. :-D

Like any test, you figure out the answer they want so that you get the good grade, and use the real-world answer in the real-world.

And what a wonderful thing you're working toward. Good luck.

Does your kid speak Chinese or English?

"Neither. He speaks Klingon and Wookiee!"

Now you're just being silly.

I mean really -- Wookiee is of no practical value, but you need Klingon to read Shakespeare. :)

Ah, the "Humorous Response". Which is actually one of the options for conversation, but usually only good with relatives. :)

Thank you. Actually there weren't any 'wrong' answers, the quiz just ran us through potential complications with three different types of responses (informative, humorous, closed). But [livejournal.com profile] moonshadowed agreed that I tend to be a bit more snippy about the idea of total strangers coming up to comment about our kid.

And she'll need to know Drow to properly understand the Munchkin rules. *evil grin*

Don't actually do this, ok?

"Oh, English, Mandarin, Cantonese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek, and Hebrew. Her Latin's a little weak to say she speaks it, but where are you going to find someone to speak it with? Hahaha.

So what languages does your kid speak?"

We have two the old-fashioned way and one, the youngest, racially mixed, adopted. We didn't go to any classes, don't recall that being an option, but obviously the only option was to be straight-forward, and I don't believe that was a problem.

When the youngest was a teenager, she would, on occasion, explain her different looks via "My mother works in the Combat Zone." Which was a section of Boston that used to cater to visiting service people, but was at that time being changed and housed the Tufts Nutrition School where my wife actually did work.

Best wishes for your new life.

Well, regardless of what the others say, I hope you will have fun with your China-Girl and love her and give her a good home and make her feel welcome and home.

The rest is not so important. =D
