This is one of those childhood memories that I managed to dig up when I was going through weeding out some of my old boxes that I had kept since I was a kid. I don't quite remember where I got it, but I'm 95% certain it was a gift from James Douglass, a family friend who had a massive collection of 1st ed. science fiction books and vintage sci-fi magazines from the 30's, 40's and 50's. [1]
Anyway, it's a children's book about everything you ever wanted to know about rockets, spacemen and the planets.
Printed in 1952.
Needless to say, from a 2008 perspective there's considerable hilarity to be found. While it doesn't go so far as to say there are jungles on Venus, apparently in '52 it was believed there was a chance there might be an atmosphere and plant life on the Moon.
I'll have to post some more of the "real facts" later when I get the chance.
[1] Including a pristine 1st. ed. hardback of RAH's The Rolling Stones, which I DIDN'T steal when I had the chance while my dad was disposing of his estate.
Yes, I'm an idiot.
