jeriendhal: (WTF)

So last night I get home and check the messages on my answering machine. There was just one, a wrong number evidentially, because it was from a woman speaking in either German or Dutch (it was hard to tell, I don't think it exactly sounded like German but I don't know much Dutch to make a comparison). I ddin't think anything of it and erased the message.

This morning around 7:15 the phone rang. This isn't a usual occurance, unless my mom is having a panic attack, so I ran to the phone to pick it up. It was the same woman, speaking rapidly in German/Dutch and continuing to talk even after I said, repeatedly, in English, "I don't understand you, you have the wrong number." Finally, after I realized she was just going to keep talking, I hung up. I feel bad about it, but whatever she wanted I wasn't going to be any help.

Don't know about German, but in Dutch it would be "sorry, maar je heeft het verkeerde nummer".

Also? Weird. Hope she gets the right number, for your sake and hers. We once had a guy call us continuously wanting to talk to a friend of his. We kept on saying "We don't know any Peter, you HAVE THE WRONG NUMBER!" and he wouldn't believe us. It was muchos frustrating.

Hmm, well, I can give you the (probably correctish) German and (certainly correct) Dutch way of saying "I'm sorry, but you have the wrong number"

German: "Es tut Mir Leid, aber Sie haben nicht das richtige Nummer."
Dutch: "Sorry, maar u heeft het verkeerde nummer." ór "Sorry, maar je hebt het verkeerde nummer." ("u heeft" is polite and "je hebt" is among friends)

But I'm not sure it'll help you much, if she didn't even understand English enough to understand "I don't understand you"... I hope she'll find the right number.

She called again just before I left to put Thomas on the bus. I told her, "I'm sorry.. you have the wrong number." Then she said something else, and so I gave our names...and said again, "I'm sorry, you have the wrong number."

I think she must have understood some English because she said something in a regretful tone, and a few other things...but when I kept saying I was sorry, I didn't understand, we hung up.

No other calls since I've been home unless they are on the answering machine.

I had a Hispanic person do that to me once. We did finally manage to be mutually intelligible (sort of), but she didn't believe me even after I made myself clear, because she said so, right out.

Oh, and a couple of weeks ago someone evidently put my phone number in their Craigslist ad for a condo rental. We were Highly Unamused.
