Just thinking about [livejournal.com profile] grayhawkfh's recent post about watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on ABC last night and I have to agree with him. Santa is pretty much a jerk throughout that one. He's immediately repelled by R's nose upon meeting him, dismissive of the boy's flying talent during the reindeer games, hates listening to the elves sing, not to mention running a sweatshop with no dental health benefits. It's a wonder he's able to keep convince the poor kid to lead his sleigh during the storm (though I half suspect that it's because Rudolph is keeping true to his promise to the Island of Misfit Toys.)

I'll bet the storm was cooked up by the Winter Warlock to try and knock some humility into him. [1]

[1] Yes, I know Santa Claus is Coming to Town was produced after Rudolph. Don't interrupt while I'm spinning fanfic ideas kiddo.

How is the Winter Warlock related to the Cold Miser?

Illegitimate son, obviously. Part of the reason Winter took off is because things got a touch tense when Santa discovered what Jessica was up to while he was making his annual deliveries.

Nope. Remember that the Miser brothers are the children of Mother Nature (but by different fathers, IIRC, as they refer to each other as "StepBrother".

Now, Mother Nature and Winter getting it on? Bow-chick-a-wow-wow!

Undoubtedly by the Oak King (Heat Miser = Summer) and Holly King (Cold Miser = Winter). Ooops, am I mixing mythoi...? };>

"Bow-chick-a-wow-wow"...? LOL... okaaaaay! ;-)

Actually, I never interpreted the Rudolph Santa as a jerk, just as a poor, overworked and stressed-out fellow - as he would nearly have to be, when you think of it! More an object of pity than scorn. Now, the King of the Island of Misfit Toys, though, there's a fellow worthy of admiration!

As we know from Year Without A Santa Claus, the old boy has a bad year occasionally. It's a very demanding job and kids are often rotten, ungrateful brats. My pet theory is that he was having one of his bad years, and it was a case of bad timing for our favorite mutant reindeer.

Chronologically, Rudolph comes *after* SCICTT, since he's clearly established as Santa by then. But I *love* the idea of the Winter Warlock getting his powers back. Oddly I don't like the idea of Cold Miser being his son -- rather, I think it more likely that he regains his powers after using the last of his magic to light the tree for Santa's lovely pagan wedding. :)

Actually, if anything, I would say that Winter might be Cold Miser's (il)legitimate son, since he has similar powers, but on a reduced scale.

Great. Thanks you two. Now I'm entertaining the problems of either Miser brother having sexual relations a la Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex.

Heat Miser: "Hey, when you're hot, you're hot!"

Have to go with Frank here, Winter is probably Cold Miser's son, given the reduced powers and the canon fact that Mother Nature is his mom.

[livejournal.com profile] doghousereilly did it first, but his version seems to have fallen so far off the Internet that not even Internet Archive can find it. 8-(
