My pistol in my hand, I followed Holmes into the central chamber. A sickly green light illuminated a wide column, some five feet wide, at the centre. It was composed of some form of incredibly strong, transparent crystal. The interior was filled with a viscous red fluid, which acted in the manner of a replacement circulatory system to support the larger than average brain within it.

In front of the column was drum-like tympani device, to serve as a voice box for the brain within the column. As we entered, it began to vibrate and I nearly aimed my pistol at the thing before Holmes pushed my arm down with no small amount of violence.

"Good evening Sherlock, Doctor Watson," Mycroft's voice emerged from the drum, as if heard through a tin listening horn...
