So apparently this flu virus is actually a stomach bug that's been going around. Thomas continued to vomit a couple of times yesterday, until his body switched tactics and attacked the other end. He's had pretty awful diarrhea since about 9pm last night and his fever spiked at 102.8 under the arm before we knocked it back with Motrin and a lukewarm bath. More worrisome is the fact that he's not taking in enough fluids to replace what he's losing, just a few reluctant sips of water. I'm going to try to take him into the doctor to have him looked over, or at least make sure it's safe to give him some Pepto Bismol. He's refusing the yogurt we bought him and has't had anything to eat since Sunday morning aside from some chicken and rice that [livejournal.com profile] moonshadowed persuaded him to consume yesterday.

Does he like Jello? That's a good way to get fluids into a kid. Or popsicles.

He doesn't really do either of those (the joys of Autism #345: ultra-picky eating habits) The nurse practitioner said the most important thing to get into him right now is pedialite, which he's been drinking pretty steadily for the past 1/2 hour thankfully.

Dehydration...

Is never a good thing... but neither is sitting in a Drs office with a sick kiddo just to have them tell you to go home.

When Richard was really ill with that nasty bazooka-puking virus, we were told to poke his fingernails. If they change color, he's still hydrated and there's "nothing to worry about" (apart from the fact that he's so bloody miserable and you want to fix it...) but if they DON'T change color, that's a sign of dehydration.

The NP I talked to was more worried about urination and the state of his lips (papery or full?) After he'd consumed about a half liter of Pedialite he was peeing pretty steadily, so she thinks he's out of the woods. It's just a matter of giving him small amounts steadily from here on out until his appetite kicks back in.

I hate to say this, but it reminds me very strongly of the time one of my cats caught a bug and refused to eat long enough that his liver started to fail and it gave him jaundice.

They say cats are autistic compared to dogs which are supposedly neurotypical, and I do have to say that when it comes to food pickiness, they sure are [wry g].

Sending good thoughts that Thomas gets well very soon.

pedialite, watered juice (about 1/2 n 1/2) always a good thing to get in them

will he eat crackers, dry cereal that's not overly sweet, like cheere-os? a little something in his stomach to help with the stomach acid is helpful

yeah - picky eating - texture issues and just plain sick grumpitude make it difficult to deal with an Autistic kid - since I'm not 'with' Evilp's kid 'all the time' I only get glimpses.

Here's hoping that once he's done with the bug that the rest of you don't end up with it.

Yikes. Sounds pretty nasty. I wish I had any tips, but...*shrugs*

Good luck in getting him better and not catching it yourself!

Good that he's drinking again. I hope he'll get his appetite back soon and that his fever drops. I had a fever some time ago and I felt pretty horrid, even without throwing up or diarea... Poor kid. I hope he feels better soon!
