Vampires, while ugly as sin, do stick to the old cliche of being immortal.

AIDS, circa the 80's, was essentially a death sentence.

So basically there are going to be a lot of homosexuals around then who ended up facing Hobson's Choice. Vamp out and become even MORE outcast than they already were, or die.

End result: Blakely is going to face a nasty discrimination suit in his future...

The same choice would be faced by people with cancer or other terminal conditions (up to an including old age). I wonder what proportion of vampires in your universe are people who were close to death before they vamped?

I was thinking the same thing - someone not ready to die and lay still over it will try and find a way to avoid it, regardless of why they are dying.

At some point there may even be a tipping of the scales where the minority becomes the majority. That could have some seriously interesting dynamics in your world.

Not all that many, just because I'm trying to duck around the social implications of such a mess. Basically turning someone or voluntarily requesting to be turned is very, very illegal. Call it akin to assisted suicide. That and there are probably a few other reasons why vampirism is considered a Fate Worse Than Death.
