As for the show itself, it's a post-Civil War Western in Spaaaaaaace. If you can swallow the idea of a bunch of barely terraformed colony worlds all looking like the American Southwest you can probably handle the series. Generally speaking the show depended on the character interaction of Firefly's crew and passengers for the drama, not on gee-whiz let's-set-the-reset-switch gimmicks such as on TNG or Voyager. And since it's a Whedon show, the characters have well-rounded quirks that draw us in (the first scene we see with Serenity's chief pilot has him killing some time at his nav board playing with toy dinosaurs.)
