So I get home last night, eat some greasy Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner, chat with Tracy about Thomas' upcoming b-day celebration, and head downstairs with this month's sample disc from Computer Games Magazine (my favorite computer gaming mag, if only because the articles appear to be written by adult, not fourteen year-olds hopped up on Jolt.)

The computer is off. Usually we leave it on 24/7, but this isn't unusual enough to bother me. So I hit the power button.

Nothing.

I hit it again. Nada. Doublecheck the power cords, which are all in place. Push the button again with no result.

"Honey! Did you shut off the computer when you left for work?"

"Nope."

Check the computer again, note that the keyboard and mouse are being fed power through the main box. I press the button again, this time holdling it down. Computer cooperates and begins to boot. I sigh in relief.

Then I hear a sound like a fan on it's last legs and the computer shuts down.

Try again two or three times, same result.

I hope to Christ this is something simple and cheap, not a fried motherboard like I suspect.

Update
After some checking, it looks I might be looking at a fried memory stick, rather than the motherboard. Have to double-check when I get home by swapping memory from Steve's computer, but if it's true, that's gonna be way cheaper than replacing the motherboard.
