They spent a week kicking around the cruiser as it traveled to Varn Prime. Their cabin was spacious, done up with an oceanic theme with expensive looking hand crafted furniture. Rufus guessed it was meant for visiting high officers, since the furniture was sized for Galapagos and not the towering Varn.
Outside their cabin they were given a “safety escort” which politely warned them away from classified areas. Which was pretty much everywhere except the ship’s arboretum, a massive chamber at least a couple of hundred meters in width and length, filled with tall trees that seemed to invite themselves to be climbed upon, and beds of flowers nestled along sculpted hillocks.
“This can’t be a warship, not with this in the center,” Hazel noted. They were sitting on the steps of a sort of amphitheater, formed by carefully sculpted artificial stones, eating a picnic lunch provided by their hosts. The guards were keeping a polite distance behind a rise, though Rufus had no doubt their every bite and chew was being monitored.
“Actually they were a fairly common feature on Dominion ships from the Time of Subjugation,” Rufus replied. “The Varn loved their comforts.”
“They loved their Ferin as well,” Admiral Gisko noted, walking down the steps of the amphitheater to join them. It was the first they had seen of her in the past five days since their polite capture. “This ship was built from standard blueprints from that time. It has a fusion generator core now, but before the Ferin would have provided all of its power needs. A family troupe would have lived their lives aboard the ship here, providing both service and entertainment for the Wise Masters.”
“There are worse prisons, I guess,” Hazel said.
Gisko didn’t respond to this jibe. Instead she gestured for them to get up, their meal done. “We’ve entered orbit around Varn Prime. I invite you at this tiem to accompany me to the surface and into the presence of my Wise Master, the Varn Gene Mage.”
“We would be delighted,” Rufus said, bowing slightly to her.
“We have a choice?” Hazel asked, looking more leery.
“There are always choices,” Gisko said. “But in this case, accompanying me would likely be the wisest.”
