I've got a conversation between Tez and his daughter Swan swirling in my head that needs to be written down properly. For now here's a taste.
"I did nothing that you yourself hadn't already done a thousand times over!"
"Truth, and if it had been only myself that you had betrayed then I might have given you a hearty "Well done" and let you have your victory. But you couldn't be satisfied with that, so you had to hurt your mother as well, and that I will not abide."
"Fine then! Murder me and be done with it!"
"No," he breathed. "No, you get to live. Not because I care a whit about you now but your mother, who has more compassion within her than you ever did and I ever will, would still mourn you. Even after what you did to her Maria would still mourn you. So you get to live." He paused. "For now."
"What do you mean?"
"Pray your mother lives a long and healthy life, for that is how long you have. For the day after she is buried in the ground I will start my hunt for you, and if you think there is a corner of this earth where you could possibly hide from me then you are wrong, for I have tread upon every inch of it and know it more itimately than you ever will get the chance to. Every day you live after your mother passes you will have to spend with your head cranked over your shoulder to watch out for me coming from behind, and that will do you no good because then I will merely appear in front of you. And when I find you I will not kill you for a year, or even ten years, but I will make your remaining life an endless parade of pain and suffering for which you will remain concious and exquisitely aware, until you are begging and begging for a death that I will not give to you until I am satisfied that payment for your betrayal has been made."
"You're insane!"
"Oh, I'm quite sane right now. But I remember every moment of madness that I've ever experienced, and I will put those memories to good use when the time comes."
"I'll go back to Mother! She'll forbid you!"
Tez nodded. "You may do that. I won't stop you. But when you do and Maria demands my Word upon it, I will say "Yes, of course" and that one time, that single time, that only time in our life together, I will lie to her."
"Then I'll tell her you said that!"
He smiled, his lips thin and bloodless. "And what makes you think, after all this, that you will be believed?"
