Yeah, just because I have two books already ~~rotting from neglect~~ on the backburner doesn't mean I can't be distracted by More Shiny Ideas.

World: Multi-species world, several human and non-human nations. Most are allied together for mutual defense from some kind of outside threat (TBD, maybe the Dragon States).

Guardians: To that end there is a supra-national peacekeeper force, rather like the Patrol in RAH's Space Cadet (minus the nukes). They're military capable (but not large enough to attack any one nation), with a duty to smooth out relations between species/nations. Like SC they renounce all loyalty to their parent nations. Must have an island or something to call home though.

Tech: Early Victorian-like. Steam engines are just coming into vogue. Background detail of railway right of ways a major issue politically (at least until all Hades breaks loose). Also gunpowder w/rifling just maturing. Nobles everywhere are being usurped by shopkeepers.

Races:

Humans: Several nations, mix of races. Not even the largest population, but they tend to be more enthusiastic about embracing new tech. Main Character's birth nation experimenting with parlimentary democracy. One or two others decaying monarchies.

Vulps (need better name): ~~Utterly ripping off~~ inspired by

chaypeta's Vulpine. Same idea of fox-ish farmer lords w/Mother Goddess. Lots of local tension as the Lords' traditional land wealth is being undermined by trade and tech. At least one smaller breakaway state experimenting with democracy, much reviled back home.

Wazagans: My OC race. Same as their space going brethern except that they're almost exclusively a Muslim analog. Basically a peaceable bunch, but insular.

Character: Main viewpoint human teen who joins the Guardians. Not exactly a street urchin, but deinitely lower class w/enough street smarts to be molded with a proper education.

Character: Adult Vulp joining the Guardians the same time as the human teen, for selfish reasons (at least at first.) He was exiled/escaped from his homeland after being found guilty for matricide, and if he's a Guardian he has the diplomatic immunity to get back in and slit the right throats...

Main Plot: Ummm...
