Train of Thought
Jun. 14th, 2004 12:22 pmFinally got my home computer back from the dead on Saturday, after replacing the power supply. When I bought the new power unit, I also picked up a cheap copy of Microsoft Train Simulator, which I'd been vaguely interested but hadn't bothered to get yet. It turned out to be a lovely purchase.
Note that this sim is lightyears from MSFS.[1] Set firmly on the ground, and confined to a limited series of real world track systems and trains, MSTS ought to be pretty boring. But from my perspective it's actaully fairly soothing trying to run passengers along Tokyo's commuter line, or playing with frieght trains in the Rocky Mountains (even if I can't figure out how to properly use the switching systems.) There isn't much to the game (hence MS's refusal to put out sequels), but then there doesn't have to be to make it enjoyable. And I expect add-on publishers will be providing new trains and tracks for years to come
[1] Aside: Speaking of light years, I dearly wish MS would come out with an updated version of their old Space Simulator game. With the ISS under construction, NASA looking for yet another replacement for the Space Shuttle, and the X-Prize, it's high time we had a new version of this game to play with.
