Now let's discuss those skyscrapers you've punched your advesary through. Is there something I don't know about the world portrayed in the clip. 'Cause otherwise I don't get how Superman thinks that this is finally a situation where he can cut loose since the isn't anyone nearby that his superstrong ass-kicking could hurt.
Well there was a full scale interdimensional invasion going on at the time. Presumably most of the civilians had already ducked into the "In case of superheroes, find cover" bomb shelters Metropolis must have.
It's indeed cool to see Darkseid get smacked around, but I prefer the cimactic scene from the original Dini & Timm Superman cartoon where Supes goes to Apokolips, goes on a roaring rampage of revenge that basically tears the entire place apart and then gets into the most vicious fight I've ever seen in kid's animation which ends with him quite literally blowing the back of Darkseid's head off.
And then the scene goes from victorious to the depths of despair with these few words: "I am many things, Superman. But here, I am God." And it works so well, and who would have dared to end a Superman animated series, of all things, on such a down note?
It's good stuff. Kids can handle it. Because their parents are there.
FAMILY animation is the key. Because kids can take the scary and the horrible when their folks are there to put it into context. It's why we HAVE stories and why we tell them, and we forget that at our peril.
