So [livejournal.com profile] moonshadowed wants to get a soda water maker for Christmas. It would help her drink more water since she likes the flavored stuff and ultimately it would be cheaper. But the listing at Amazon contains the odd restriction "Not for sale on Catalina Island.

The soda lobby must be really powerful there...

:-)
Restriction on things that can be shipped from the mainland?

(I live in a condo with a courtyard. We can't have any kind of outdoor grills within 10 ft of the building. They can be out in the courtyard - but if they're gas grills, the fuel has to be carried over the courtyard fence - it can't come through the building. Regulations. Fire, in this case.)

I cannot imagine. Catalina is a tourist island just off the coast of California. Ships and planes travel back and forth to it daily carrying all sorts of weird stuff.

FWIW, we'll be getting one from my severance money - I'll probably be picking it up this Saturday. You might check out http://www.sodastream.com/ for local sources - it turned out to be about the same to buy it locally as to buy it on-line for me. Their web-site had a $180 starter kit in our preferred version, my local retailer will sell me the equivalent stuff for $181.

If nothing else, find out if you have a local retailer to get CO2 refills from.

Ah, thank you. Turns out the closest sources are at our local mall. I'll check them out.

And I just thought of this - stop at the mall and pick up a bottle or two of mixes, and buy one liter bottles of carbonated water at your local grocery store. You don't have to use their machine to make the carbonated water to add the mixes to! That way you can see if you like the flavors they do. Or you can experiment with whatever flavorings she'd like to try out.

Am I making sense?
