Vulpine Homosexuality
Sep. 23rd, 2010 06:35 amThe things I think about at 5am...
Like every other race in the GSA, the Vulpine have a fair percentage (estimated between 5 and 7 percent) of their population committed to non-hetero relationships. While outright discrimination is of course outlawed under Vulpine law, there's a strong view among many heterosexual Vulpine that gays "cheat" by avoiding direct commitment to a "normal" family relationship (ie: helping to raise children). Society tends to mitigate this discrimination if the Vulpine in question is willing to show commitment in other ways, usually by either joining with their life partner to raise an adopted cub or one created for them them by mixing their genes and gestating in a uterine replicator, or by becoming the "Close Uncle" in their sibling's family.
For those gays not interested in a family life, the other accepted course is a Military Service career. This leads to some demographic skewing, as an estimated 20 to 25 percent of Military Caste Vulpine are openly gay. It's considered a slight asset, since bachelor officers are easier to move between bases without disruption to their close family.
In the entertainment media the Close Uncle stereotype is usually found in Commoner Caste situation comedies, usually perpetually short on either cash as they pay for outrageous presents for their nieces and nephews, or short on time as their siblings take advantage of them for free babysitting service. Military Caste characters are almost alwaysportrayed in dramas as dedicated officers who sacrifice the possibility of family for life in the Service.

Yeah, only with the Vulpine would gays be expected to either adopt or stay close to their siblings kids, or be dedicated members of the military. :)
Oh, and this probably so Not Canon in the Terinu universe as to defy description. :)

or be dedicated members of the military
Ancient Greece? Maybe more the other way round, "dedicated members of the military should be paired off with another man".
Makes me wopnder what they think of people who just don't want children.

Date: 2010-09-23 06:26 pm (UTC)I think the culture would be fine with it. I actually once asked Peta if there's some cultural aversion to birth control, since the Vulpine had half their population wiped out in the comic's back story. She answered that it would be interfering with a vixen's authority (specifically over herself) so no.
OTOH the almanac has this to say about the whole matter:
"As a cultural guideline only the eldest or dominant sister may produce offspring. Younger siblings who wish to conceive must first attain her permission or alternately leave the family clan and set up their own family clan from scratch. The eldest daughter and the wife of the eldest son are naturally assumed to have permission to start a family."
YMMV
