Scene: Bob, a Vin Diesel-ish “Nice and Built Like a Brick Wall” kinda guy gets a call on his cellphone.

Bob: Hey, Sarah. What's up?

Sarah (at a loud party): My friend Angie needs rescuing from a creep at our office party.

Bob (nodding in understanding): Okay. Does she need a husband, boyfriend, or a brother?

Sarah: Brother would be best. There's another guy here she actually wants to date, but he hasn't figured it out yet.

Bob: Got it. Do you want Angry, Concerned, or Mom Called and It's Important?

Sarah: Why don't we go with Concerned, with a side of Looming Intimidatingly?

Bob (grins): I can do that.

(ten minutes later Bob has extricated a grateful Angie from El Creepo)

Angie: Thanks. That was really smooth. Have you done that before?

Bob (takes a bow): Oh, yeah. One thing the girls could count on at my college was that I was always available for a rescue and that I'm as gay as a rainbow unicorn.

Almost two years and fifty-three thousand words to reach this point. :)

In less than two hours both the Blacksailor sisters arrived at Darktail Manor, Karra accompanied by her spouse, Fin. Fin was indeed a Blended as Ali had told Salli, wearing the baggy, androgynous clothes some of the genetically engineered sex preferred. Karra looked like she’d been crying on the flight over, and leaned on Fin for support as Salli and Zaker led them to the conference parlor.

“I’m glad you were all able to come,” Salli told them. “I know, Karra, that you quite upset about the that unfortunate incident with Ali and your two boys.”

“Of course I was upset, but I don’t want her dead,” Karra declared, as Fin gave her a supportive squeeze.

“Our boys are in school today,” Fin said. “They wanted to see Ali, but I told them it would be a bad idea.”

“When you see her, I think you will all agree it wouldn’t be a sight for young children, no,” Salli agreed regretfully.

“So why did you want us to come here first, Lady Sallivera?” Razi asked.

“I have some things I wish discuss with you, about what to do… in case some hard decisions need to be made, about Ali,” Salli said. “It might be best if we discuss that now, so there won’t be any needless confusion when her brother Lu becomes legally involved.”

“Ah, yes,” Razi said. “Though we could have done that over the com if need be.”

“I think face to face is much preferable in situations like this.” Salli turned to Zaker, who doing her furniture imitation along the wall, much as Ali once had. “Zaker, please flag down Nari and have her bring tea and biscuits for us while we discuss things. Then double-check the CP locks on my and Ali’s rooms.”

“There’s an alarm set to go off if they’re tampered with, Lady Salli,” Zaker noted, raising an eyebrow at the request.

“Do it anyway, please. For my peace of mind.”

Zaker shrugged and touched her forehead in salute, heading out of the door.

“If you’ll be patient, Nari should be along shortly,” Salli told the others. “No sense in starting only to be interrupted.”

Since Ali was still forbidden from accompanying Salli to official functions, she had to drag Zaker along with to the second part of Lady Highglider’s investure ceremony, which involved a trip to her new manor house in Highglider domain. Which unfortunately was also the old manor house that Countess Evelina Highglider, and her son, had occupied. And for two brief and terrifying years, Salli had as well.

She stepped out of the ground skimmer, and had to pause, looking up at the thick stone walls of the main house with trepidation.

Highglider and her son are dead, she told herself, with less conviction than she liked. No one here means you harm.

The day of Lady Aganatha Highglider’s investiture to the Highglider domain came two days later. As was traditional, it was a dawn event, beginning at the Darktail sacred grove. Salli was woken two hours beforehand by a diffident Nari, who touched her briefly on the shoulder and whispered, “Lady Salli? Time to get ready.”

Wake up call. In more ways than one. )

As predicted Civil Protection spent the rest of the afternoon and evening searching the garage for evidence left by the graffiti artist, to absolutely no effect. Questioning the staff was put off until the next morning, but with well over a hundred servants employed by their House, never mind an equal number of District administration employees coming and going every day, it was going to take some time.

Later the next morning, as the first round of questioning was beginning, Salli received a call from Rolas. She quickly rushed to her suite to bring it up on her comsole, to find her twin sitting in her office, dressed for the day in his House uniform.

“Good morning, Salli,” he greeted cheerfully. “I was just checking in to see how you and Alinadar are getting along.”

Salli's mouth hung open a moment as Rolas' completely ordinary question stopped her short. “That's... complicated at the moment,” she finally said.

To put it mildly )

Someone was gently shaking Salli awake. She was laying awkwardly on the cushions of the conversation pit, still dressed in her increasingly rumpled party clothes, the morning sun shining through a break in the curtains. Blinking wearily back into wakefulness, she saw Nari standing over her with an apprehensive expression on her face.

“Milady?” Nari said. “It's after 0900. Your lady mother thought you should be awake by now, and sent me to check on you. Are you all right?”

While the Arkham games are pretty much GrimDark with an extra helping of Dead Parents for that added bit of angst, you can find a lot of humor in the mook chatter Batman can eavesdrop on during the games. Particularly in Knight a lot of the rioters on the streets express things like wanting to grab toys for their kids or anger at the Arkham Knight's militia trying to take over the city.

And in one random moment you can hear this:

Miltia: My wife doesn't know what I'm doing. She thinks I'm here on a business trip.

2nd Miltia: Yeah, my husband doesn't know either.

Please bear in mind all the militia in the game are male. :)

For a few seconds Melanie could only sputter. Then she slapped her palm down on his shoulder, eliciting a sharp cry of pain from Rolas as she shouted, “That’s not funny! I thought you were dead!”

Rolas winced and cried out, “Ow! Milady, please!”

Oh, Mother Goddess, maybe he really wasn’t joking. “Rolas,” she said carefully, willing herself to be calm. “What’s the last thing you remember?”

“Do you want that anti-nausea patch now?” Rolas asked, as Melanie pushed herself up off the catamaran’s railing, wiping her muzzle clean with a wet washcloth.

“I’ll be fine,” she grumbled. Nevertheless she took the sealed packet from him, reading the warnings on the back carefully, before ripping it open and pressing it to the inside of her left ear. It was the most convenient spot if she didn’t want to shave a patch of fur off her pelt.

Popping back over to one of my Red Vixen stories in progress, while I muse about the Groupmind's nexxt move.

Melanie was carrying the last box of groceries aboard Rolas’ sailboat, when there was a deep throated call of “Oi! What are you doing on Rollie’s boat?” She turned to see a compact, white-furred male, wearing deck shorts and an unbuttoned shirt that showed a set of abdominal muscles even more impressive than her husband’s, walking down the pier quickly towards her.

Despite the oh so horrified reactions of some people, I find the idea of two female characters in their mid to early twenties looking deeply into each other's eyes while holding hands (romantic music rising naturally) considerably less squicky than Aang and Katara sharing a deep and romantic kiss at the end of the original Last Airbender series. Because the former was between two adults, and the latter was between a girl and a boy who were just fourteen and barely thirteen.
jeriendhal: (Red Vixen)
Waaaay back in Captive there was a scene where Rolas and the Red Vixen were discussing his current love life, or rather lack thereof. After a litany of his duties, obligations, and current guilt trips that discouraged his dating life, the Red Vixen finally gets him to admit he had a couple of flings back when his was doing his Service tour. Specifically he states:

"A few times, with a couple of my crewmates on the cruiser we were assigned to."

Never did specify what gender the crewmates were. Or whether it was one at a time.... ;)

You know how you're not supposed to speak ill of the dying/dead because no matter how much of a bastard they were in life, they were in the end a member of the human race and we're all flawed in some way?

Fuck that.

Fred Phelps was an evil, angry, sonofbitch, who took his prejudices and honed them in a way to cause the maximum amount of misery to innocent people in the most painful, vulnerable moments of their lives and so he received the maximum amount of publicity for his vile acts.

If it's true that he was excommunicated from his own "church" because he was in fact so deep in the closet he was in fucking Narnia, I consider it no where near enough irony to make up for the bile he produced over the years.

The only, single good thing to come of his years of protesting, was the fact that he was such a horrible, prejudiced bastard, that others who suffered from twinges of homophobia looked him and were sufficiently repulsed that the stigma of homosexuality is rapidly being shed and homosexual couples are now allowed to live and love each other openly and receive equal rights under the law in many states now, and many more to come.

Goodbye, Fred. I hope Matt Sheppard meets you at the Pearly Gates so he can have the personal privilege of kicking your ass straight to Hell.

Note: Salli is not happy about this situation...

“This is impertinent, outrageous, intolerable!” Lady Salli shouted, split skirts swirling as she paced back and forth across the pavilion. “You dare to arrest my liege-sworn servant in my domain! After being invited to be my guest no less!”

“I am obligated to follow the law,” Commander Blacksailor said stiffly. “I'm not permitted to pick and choose which bits to pay attention to.”

With the silver chain now locked around her neck, Alinadar did seem to settle down finally. Salli lay on her side, snuggled against Ali automatically, in the manner of sisters sharing a bed. Well, almost. Salli was dressed in her usual sleeping gown. Ali only in her bare fur and a pair of cotton shorts, as seemed to be her custom.

Not that it was sexual. Salli wasn't sure she could handle sexual anymore. But the fact that Ali was warm, had a familiar, comforting scent, and was there seemed to make the older vixen automatically relax.

But damnit, now Salli couldn't sleep, the effort dealing with Ali's midnight troubles having jarred her out of her own rest. It wasn't helping the the younger vixen now breathing slowly and heavily, was waving her tail back in forth in some evidently pleasant dream, the base right against Salli's...

Not helping. She squirmed forward a bit, relieving her from the pressure and motion. Ali squirmed in response, snugging herself more tightly against Salli's body.

"What is it?" Alinadar asked, turning the small box over in her hands.

"There are certain protocols to this sort thing that I'm ignoring," Salli said. She'd taken an emergency dose of her anti-anxiety meds. She was still shaking. "Can't ask your head of household for permission, since your family is gone. I'm not asking mine either, since technically I outrank Mother now."

"But what is it?"

"Open it and see."

Ali popped open the lid. Nestled in a bed velvet were two matching golden commitment bracelets, decorated with silver inlay.

"Alinadar Waterfarmer, would you be my wife?" Salli gasped.

With the commentary running, and in the first episode I believe it was A.C Chapin (who plays Ace) complaining that there's no Ace/Ray slash out there. [1]

Um, let me work on that guys. I'll need a break from LotRV eventually...

(And could someone explain why Time Rift doesn't have a TvTropes page yet?)

[1] For those who are not extremely fannish old school Whovians out there, here's the history lesson. Once upon a time Jon Blum, the same one who went on to be a popular New Adventures author along with his wife, Kate Orman, was a college student with a group of friends, a video camera, and a pretty good replica of Sylvester McCoy's DW costume. So he and friends A.C. Chapin and Amy Steele wrote up a script for a four episode serial involving the titular rift, daleks, the Master and a whole lot of location shooting around Washington DC.[2]

And along the way, even counting the usual amateur actors, do it yourself costumes, uneven continuity (including a truly epic actor switch involving fake moustaches) it actually turned out to be the best damned fan production of Doctor Who you've ever seen prior to the YouTube era. Mostly because of Jon's obsession with getting right, along with pretty good original music and some excellent video effects from A Miracle of Science's Mark Sachs.

[2] Including the DC Metro, which real film production companies usually don't bother with because its too much of a hassle trying to get permission for an action sequence.

[livejournal.com profile] jimhines has an interesting essay on his LJ about reviews for his novel Libromancer that discusses the negative reviews he's received due to the relationship the protagonists end up in at the end. And though the final relationships at the end of my own Shadow of the Red Vixen are considerable different, they might generate negative reviews as well, for entirely different reasons.
