While it is perhaps heresy to say this, I think if taken out of the 80s Airwolf would lose much of its awesomeness. Any remake would need to explain just why Airwolf was supposed to be more impressive than existing helicopters (Hmm, other than perhaps in terms of range -- they did a pretty good job of reaching all sorts of parts of the world).
Now, the right way of doing it would probably be to keep it set in the 80s and do only modest tweaking to the Airwolf. Like missiles that actually looked like missiles instead of streaks of light, and maybe redoing the retractable missile bay as some kind of retractable auto-loading missile system.
Instead it would probably be set in the modern day, and we'd get a helicopter that was maybe-awesome but most certainly not the Airwolf in anything but name. The AINO to the comic book movie world's CINO (Catwoman In Name Only). Probably something that would look like a comic book version of a souped up Apache, with chameleon paint (or heaven help us 'an experimental holographic projection system'), miniature cruise missiles, and pylon machine guns that strike harder than an A-10's gun.
I could see making a big change so long as it was one and only one big change, and it was an awesome change. Like saying that it wasn't merely a prototype of a new attack helicopter but that it also had a range limited only by the crew's endurance due to using an experimental micro nuclear reactor. That could even possibly fit some into the 80s aesthetic ("Well of course it's nuclear powered, it's an experimental prototype isn't it!").
