I actually just watched Eric Bana's "Love the Beast" about his beloved Ford Falcon, which is what got this plot bunny stuck in my head.

It's right up your alley. Bana is a serious motorhead, and his dad is almost as bad (owning a Ford Thunderbird that hasn't even driven for ten years, just because it would kill him to get rid of it).
