For [livejournal.com profile] ankewehner's prompt of "What'd a haunted house set up by Tez look like? "

"That's your idea for a haunted house, Tez? Just a tour around the lower floor, with a stop at my office?" Maria demanded.

"You think making a child think how hard it is to balance a ledger wouldn't be scary?" he replied with a grin, leaning back on the solar's couch.

"Tez..."

"Would you rather show them something genuinely frightening? Like say, the cell down in the basement where your old master kept you?" he asked, his expression growing more serious.

She raised her eyebrows in consideration. "There's a thought."

"I was making a joke, in poor taste I'll admit."

"It's down there and it's scary enough. Believe me I know."

He sat up again, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Hrm. Make a dark corridor leading down the stair, maybe hiring a village girl or two to scream occasionally to set everyone on edge. Put up a few mage lights with red gels to give it some atmosphere, find a plaster skeleton or two to lay around artistically in your old shackles. It certainly would work."

She grinned at him. "Oh, I like that idea!"

Tez shook his head. "It's still rather tasteless though. What was done to you in that place..."

"Was done, and long since finished," Maria said firmly. "I will be damned if I'm going to let my history with my old master affect what I choose to do with the place."

"A cogent point," he admitted. He smiled finally. "I've even got an idea for a finale. We tell them that a monster was being kept in the cell, but then they find they door open when they finally get down there. We can have Sinod hiding in a dark corner wearing a rag costume or such and have them leap out to chase everyone back up the stairs for cookies and apple cider."

"Excellent, but why do we need Sinod when we have me?" Maria touched her horns and waggled her fingers in a warding gesture against evil.

"Because you've worked very hard to be accepted as a person and not a monster," he said.

"It's two nights of playacting, Tez," she said. "It'll be fun!"

"One night," he said. "I'll take the second."

She looked over his short, slight frame and touched her horns again as she stood up to her full six feet. "I don't think you could be as scary as me, Tez," Maria said.

He smiled sharply at her, in a most unsettling way. "Oh, try me."

*snerk* It's not in the look, but in the manner. :D

Also, yay! for "I will be damned if I'm going to let my history with my old master affect what I choose to do with the place."

I"m glad you liked that line. Maria is definitely one of those, "Don't you dare pity me!" types when it comes to her old life.
