ankewehner's fault.

The water had started gushing up from the hole shortly after Maria had escaped from the sinking boat. At first it had merely flowed quickly, now it was a geyser rising thirty feet into the air before coming down in a wide spray.
"Someone is going to notice that soon," Maria said, dropping the last of their supplies at the bottom of the hill, out of range of the deluge. "Why is it spurting up like that?"
"The boat must have sunk all the way to the bottom of the sea. Call it about seven hundred at fifty feet. That would result in the water being forced through at nearly twenty five times sea level air pressure," Tez said.
"So when does it stop?"
The elf shrugged. "One: when the hole is plugged, difficult to do with that spray unless we get some significant engineering help. Two: when the gate between the worlds loses structural integrity, in other words, when the boat rots enough that the magical hatch disintegrates, which given the depth and cold of the water may take a century or more. Three: when the pressure between the water in the ocean and our current location equalizes."
Maria scratched at base of her left horn, thinking that over. "You mean when the top of that hill is under seven hundred and fifty feet of water?"
"Yes. Well, call it three hundred feet or so. The ocean in our world will be draining out as this area fills after all. Eventually equilibrium will have to be established."
"And this entire continent, and maybe a couple of others, are flooded here, and back in our world the oceans are drained half dry." She took in a deep breath. "Tez, that's a problem."
He nodded, one of his queer smiles on his face. "To put it mildly. Fortunately I think we have at least a decade or so to fix things before it becomes an actual catastrophy."
"Let's try to be a bit faster than that. If we're stuck here, I'd like to at least be a good neighbor, rather than a Destroyer of Worlds."
Tez nodded again. "Don't worry, Maria. That's my job."

I reserve the right to alter the plot as I see fit. Not that I have a plot right now.
We'll get back to the Mysterious Goat Person later. ;p

Date: 2012-06-24 09:54 am (UTC)It'd probably be bad for the immediate area in less than a decade... it's salt water, after all.
I guess there would be the off chance that something plugs the hole from the other side, but, well, that'd be chance.
