"Enjoying yourself?" Tez asked, watching the goat folk do raucous line dance in front of them. Since this involved them tapping their hooves on a wooden stage, the noise was quite impressive.

"No," Maria said tightly, the smile never leaving her face as she sat on the throne that had been improvised for her. Given the noise and the language barrier, there was no need to worry about being overhead. "I want my shirt back."

"Welcome to my world," he told her, kneeling at her feet, playing his part Evil Alien Devil Beast that had been tamed by her (admittedly not much of a stretch). "Given that it doesn't seem to be the fashion here, and your status as the local avatar of their goddess, I think it would be best if you stayed uncovered."

"Ha. You don't have to worry about your breasts bouncing all over when you walk."

"Would you prefer doing this act for the penguins again?"

"Shut. Up."

The dancing finally stopped, much to the relief of Tez's ears. The goat person that they had surmised was the village elder stepped forward into the torchlight, bowing respectfully and speaking in his yodeling tongue to her again. Maria nodded to him in return, the languages between Goat and Goddess still in the realm of the Unknown.

The elder motioned, and the little shepherd that had first found them by the god stones stepped forward, kneeling in front of Maria, holding an empty clay bowl underneath his chin. He had an odd expression on his hairy face, fearful, mixed with that peculiar need to be brave in the face of something vastly important. The elder said something to the shepherd, who nodded, taking in a deep breath as the elder curled his fingers in the boy's hair, drawing his had back slightly.

Oh, no. Tez made a grab for Maria's arm just as the elder's silver knife was drawn from its sheath. Maria leaped forward, grabbing the naked blade in her hand as the clay bowl fell and shattered on the ground. Time seemed to freeze for a moment as the shepherd, the elder, and the entirely too many upset natives looked at her in shock.

"Someone is supplying them with stainless steel tools," Tez said into the silence. "That's useful to know."

"Great," Maria said, holding the blade in her bleeding palm, eyes locked with the elder's. "What do we do know."

"Make like an Angry Goddess, or shortly you're going to be a very dead mortal."

Ah, the classic scenario :) Hopefully it goes better for Maria than it did for Barbara Wright :)

I think I know the wiki you're talking about. :) I'm a bit embarassed by the grammar errors in that version. Though for the low low price of zero cents you can get a much better edited version with a spiffy cover at Smashwords. Or the whole collection is available there or at

Hope you enjoyed it anyway.

(Why no, I'm not above shameless self-promotion) ;p

AS soon as my Paypal is non-negative again, I shall buy the full version!

Your sample edition blurb has a typo, though it's fixed in the full version. (Betrayed an enslaved)

Also? Who did you have do your cover art?

Argh. I'll fix that as soon as I can.

Cover art is by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] chaypeta, author/artist of the Terinu webcomic (23 chapters are currently written and drawn but it's currently re-running after being on hiatus for two years, while she draws and inks new chapters).

Link to her DeviantArt site, with the cover art on the front page minus the typography. The lovely woman did the whole thing for free for me.

Other links of Tez and Maria in various states of worksafeness available upon request. :)
